Milwaukee Career College is proud to participate in its second year volunteering for TeamSmile at Miller Park! Maria Rodriguez (Dental Assistant Program Chair), Paul Syvock (MCC Career Services), a few dental assistant students, and dental graduate Lizbeth Hernandez, all got together to participate in this wonderful event.
TeamSmile is an organization that provides life-changing dental care and instruction to children in communities who do not have access to proper dental care. The mission of TeamSmile is to facilitate partnerships between dental professionals, pro sports teams, and dental organizations. The Milwaukee Brewers partnered with TeamSmile to host the event. Roughly 300-400 students from the Milwaukee Public School system received dental treatment. Students received dental examinations, fillings, extractions and much more from dental professionals that volunteered.
We noticed approximately 5 dental residents working the event and providing treatment for over 6 hours to accommodate a morning and afternoon schedule. Many of these student’s families do not have means to provide excellent dental care for them, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to help serve the community and educate the students and their families on the importance of dental care.
MCC dental assistant students were thrilled to participate and get hands-on experience with new dental technology. A few of the MCC volunteers shared their experience:
“My experience at Team Smile was nothing short of amazing, It felt so good to be a part of something that makes a positive difference in children’s lives. Team Smile is something I would volunteer for again in the future. Giving back to my community has always been a passion of mine. To be able to have a good time, make a difference, and involve my future career is a true blessing.” -Samantha M.
“My experience with Team Smile was very educating and a great opportunity to give back to the community. I enjoyed the time spent with all of the volunteers both the dental professionals and the general volunteers from within the community. As a dental student, volunteering is a major part of my career goals. Public health has always been an interest of mine.” -Emani W.
MCC volunteers shared that they loved being able to answer questions and calm nerves of children who have never had a dental experience. In addition to making an impact and having a good experience, our students were able to learn how to use dentrix and process radiographs at the TeamSmile event! The event was really wonderful and a great chance for our students to be exposed to real patients and equipment. It was a very successful event and we will certainly be back next year!
