Medical Assistants sitting at a desk, smiling, reviewing paperwork.

Medical environments are typically very busy with several moving parts. The medical assistant plays an important role in the medical practice as they help keep everything on track and organized. From checking in patients to taking vital signs, medical assistants are busy!

Due to daily routines, medical assistants may not get the appreciation they deserve for all of their hard work. Luckily, there is a special week each year devoted showing special appreciation to your medical assistants⏤Medical Assistants Recognition Week is October 15-19, 2018. Here are 5 simple ways celebrate the medical assistants in your life this week!

Give them a special ribbon or pin to wear.

Giving your medical assistants a special ribbon or pin to wear on their scrub top is a really simple way to let them know they are appreciated. A pin or ribbon is an indicator that the medical assistant is first place, “best in the show”, or the most valuable player. When you present them with their pin or ribbon, be sure to take a moment and tell them how much you appreciate their hard work. Not only will they know you appreciate them, but it will also make patients aware of the recognition week!

Write a kind note or letter.

Sharing kind words can go a lot further than you might think. If can handwrite it, that will be best, but if your handwriting is impossible to read, a typed letter will do too. The most important part of writing a letter is to make sure it’s personalized. If you have more than one medical assistant, don’t just send them all the same generic letter. Taking the time to personalize the letters will make each medical assistant feel special!

A gift card or a one-time bonus.

Giving your medical assistants a small gift card or one-time bonus is a great way to show your appreciation! The gift card could be for a particular store or restaurant, especially if you know some of the medical assistant’s favorite places. Or just go with a generic visa card so the can choose what to spend it on. You could even just add a small bonus to their next pay-check and let them know it’s to tell them how much you appreciate them.

Take your medical assistants out for a nice meal.

If you have a bigger group of medical assistants, opting for a meal is a great way for everyone to celebrate together. You could make it after work or close down the office for a bit and do an extended lunch. It might be fun to suggest that everyone dress up for the occasion since they’re typically in scrubs. Choosing a nicer restaurant can also give the occasion more significance.

Give them flowers to display at the office.

Flowers are a standby that shows appreciation. Whether you opt for fresh cut flowers or a plant that will be around all year long, be sure to include a personal note. You could either do one big flower arrangement for the whole office to enjoy or you could give each of your medical assistants their own smaller arrangement to take home with them. Regardless, flowers are a great way to say thank you!

These are just a few ideas to make sure your medical assistant knows how much you appreciate the work they do to keep things on track. The value of a medical assistant is in knowing what their doctor expects and helping out wherever they can. Not only your patient, but other medical professionals will also recognize when you have a top-notch medical assistant. When you are lucky enough to find a valuable medical assistant, you’ll want to hold onto them as long as you can!
