Dream job found after completing Medical Assistant training

If you’ve been considering completing Medical Assistant training, you might be curious what sort of work environments are available in this field after graduation. So, where do Medical Assistants work? A physicians office may be the first thing that comes to mind, however, there are a wide variety of settings for a Medical Assistant to choose from.

Urgent Care Centers

More than ever, Americans are utilizing outpatient urgent care centers. The majority of patients do not arrive at these facilities with serious complications. This tends to result in a less hectic pace, making this environment easy to manage. Most centers are open both nights and weekends, which can provide flexibility to the Medical Assistants schedule.

Diagnostic Labs

In this setting Medical Assistants are responsible for properly handling and testing provided samples, along with other administrative tasks. This is a less patient orientated work environment that works more closely with data. It is crucial that a Medical Assistant in this role provides accurate data input and pays close attention to details.

Educational Facilities

Most major colleges and universities have a medical clinic on campus. At these educational facilities, you would work with college students that are experiencing minor medical problems. A college or university would be a good setting for anyone that wants to stay in an educational environment after completing their Medical Assistant training. This would be a low-key position that plays a vital role in the community.

Specialized Physician Offices

If you are interested in a specific field of medicine, then it would be beneficial to seek out this area of expertise after completing your Medical Assistant training. Chiropractors, podiatrists, and urologists are just a few of the types of specialized offices that hire Medical Assistants. The daily tasks would be similar to that of a general physicians office.

Detention Centers and Prisons

Prisons and detention centers provide various medical services to the inmates of their facility. This environment is not for the weak of heart. Inmates often struggle with substance abuse and violent backgrounds. If you are looking for a challenge, this could be a good fit! Being a Medical Assistant in a prison or detention center can be very rewarding for the right type of person.

Insurance Companies

Some medical assistants find that they prefer to not work directly with patients. Good news, administrative positions with insurance companies do exist! Medical Assistants address patient questions and concerns, assess claims and process information from medical billing offices. This is the perfect environment for someone that has medical knowledge, yet prefers to be in an office setting.

Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities

Now more than ever, there is an influx of nursing home and assisted living residents. This influx will rise as the baby boomer generation continues to age. The good news is that this has created a great demand for Medical Assistants. This work environment should only be considered if you’re comfortable in a geriatric setting. It would require someone with a big heart that can commit to meeting the residents’ needs.

A hospital would be a fast-paced setting that would also allow a Medical Assistant to work in various departments. A Medical Assistant might find themselves in the emergency room assisting trauma patients or simply monitoring vitals on the inpatient floor. This high energy environment isn’t a good fit for everyone. But, if you enjoy being on your toes and performing at a superior level, this may be the place for you.

These are just the tip of the iceberg, there are various settings a Medical Assistant might work in. It is ideal to have an idea of what type of work environment you’d like to work in before you complete your Medical Assistant training. If you have an idea of the setting you’ll be in, it will be easier to tailor your training to that specific setting.
