New Year’s Resolutions: 5 Tips to Keep Them
A Step-By-Step Guide on How to Stick with Your New Year’s Resolutions
New year, new you, and another resolution. You’ve said it every year but just can’t seem to keep your goals. Maintaining your New Year’s resolutions can be challenging, but Milwaukee Career College has your back on sticking with them! In this blog, you’ll find the 5 best steps to following through with your New Year’s resolutions going into the New Year.
Step 1: Find an Accountability Buddy
You’re not alone in the process of keeping your New Year’s resolution. Many of our MCC students have goals, whether it be enrolling in one of our four hands-on programs, saving money, or finding a new job. Our MCC students and instructors are always eager to help others.
Samantha Gingras, a former Vet Assistant student, said she goes to her instructors when she needs encouragement, sharing, “If you do have questions, you can tell them, ‘Hey look, I need extra assistance with this,’ and they’re more than happy to help you out with that.”
Training alongside other students with similar interests every day might introduce you to a new study partner or even a lifelong friend! A key takeaway is that sticking with your New Year’s resolutions is easier if you do it with others.
Step 2: Make a List and Stick to It
Sounds simple right? We know it can be overwhelming but visualizing your goals can help stimulate your productivity.
- Write down your tasks,
- List what it will take to accomplish your New Year’s resolutions
- Give yourself an adequate amount of time to reach it
Making a list of your goals will help you lay out a plan that will lead you to success. Now grab your favorite-colored Sharpie and get started!
Step 3: Have a Routine
Many of our students build a routine around their class responsibilities. Beyond attending class regularly, some wake up early to make breakfast, go to the gym before class, block out breaks during the day to study, or schedule other commitments before or after class. Finding and sticking with a routine that works for you will give you an extra boost of confidence. You’ll be refreshed with a clear mind and ready to tackle your New Year’s resolution!
Step 4: Be Patient
Reaching your New Year’s goals won’t happen overnight. It will take patience, hard work, and determination. Remember, your goal is to keep your New Year’s resolution. When the journey gets tough, look back at Steps 1 – 3. If your New Year’s goal is the same as last year, maybe it’s time to modify that resolution:
- Brainstorm ways you can make it different or more challenging
- If you didn’t follow through on your resolution last year, ask yourself, “Is this goal attainable?” If the honest answer is no, it’s okay to change your goals
Keep these ideas close by for a healthy mind of reaching your New Year’s resolution. And lastly, don’t forget Step 5!
Step 5: Reward Yourself
Take the time to acknowledge how far you’ve come with your New Year’s resolution! You’re in the process of making it happen, and that alone is a success. Reward yourself every step of the way by having a cheat meal, an extra drink at dinner, or treating your study partners to a night out in Milwaukee! MCC’s campus is conveniently located by fantastic restaurants, shops, and other fun activities. Just be sure to make it back to class ready to crush your New Year’s resolution!
