Every Vet Assistant Should ask 6 Questions about being a Vet Assistant
If you’re an animal lover and are interested in the medical field, you may be considering a career as a Vet Assistant. This rewarding job is projected to grow by 19% over the next ten years. Here are a couple questions you will want to ask yourself before completing your Veterinary Assistant training.
What do Veterinary Assistants do?
A Veterinary Assistant manages basic care for animals, typically in either a clinic or hospital setting. Animals staying overnight will need to be fed and kept in a clean environment. Animals may need to be restrained for procedures, and as a Veterinary Assistant, you would be called to do so. Veterinary assistants also learn emergency first aid and assist medical procedures by sterilizing instruments and providing nursing care to animals.
How much are Veterinary Assistants paid?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for an American Veterinary Assistant is $25,250 annually. However, Veterinary Assistants working in universities and research laboratories have a median annual income above $30,000.
Would I need to complete Veterinary Assistant training?
It is possible to become a Veterinary Assistant with only a high school diploma. However, many employers prefer candidates with certifications and more training. Obtaining a certification from an accredited trade school means less on the job training, which is very appealing to an employer.
Am I good with animals?
Animals typically do not enjoy visiting the vet’s office. It’s a new environment they are not familiar with or they have bad memories there. If barking dogs or scratching cats seem overwhelming, then a career as a Veterinary Assistant may not be best for you. However, if you can recognize signs of stress and know how to calm down an upset animal, it could be the perfect fit.
Do I have a strong stomach?
Medical work, in general, can get messy. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will have to deal with injuries, blood, and cleaning animal waste. Before you’ve landed on a career as a Veterinary Assistant, be certain that your stomach is strong enough to handle this.
Can I handle emotional pet owners?
Veterinary Assistants interact with pet owners on a daily basis and it’s important to make a good impression. To some, a pet is considered a family member and they’re trusting you to take good care of it. There may be times when you need to empathize with pet owners.
